The collection documents the Holocaust experiences of Filip and Janina (née Hirsch) Schächter (later Philip and Jean Schechter) living in Poland and Germany under false identities, and their daughter Basha Schächter (later Barbara Cohen) who was a hidden child in Dürnholz, Germany (Drnholec, Czech Republic) from 1942-1945. Biographical materials include documents under Janina and Filip’s false identities, Janina and Frank Rogalski; identification papers; Basha’s identification card from the Stuttgart displaced persons camp; a testimonial document by Janina; a small amount of correspondence including a few wartime letters from Filip; and clippings about the Schächter family’s arrival in the United States onboard the SS Marine Flasher in 1946. Also included is a copy of Free Again, a publication in Yiddish produced at the Stuttgart DP camp, with a photograph of Basha in it. Additionally, there are copies of personal narratives written by Filip’s sisters Bronislawa Falecki and Maria Schechter-Lewinger. Photographs include the Hirsch family; pre-war photographs of Filip and Janina; wartime photographs of the Schächter family in Bukaczowce, Kraków, and Pulsnitz, Poland; Basha in hiding in Dürnholz; and Janina and Baha in the Föhrenwald DP camp. 

The collection is arranged as two series: Series 1: Biographical material, 1940-1998; Series 2: Photographs, 1917-1947
