Outbreak of the German-Soviet war; relinquishing his chance to join other Jews escaping to the East; sealing the Jewish quarter while stores and synagogues were being torched; robbing of homes and riots against Jews by local Ukrainians; illness of his father; robbery of furniture from the family home by Germans;"Aktion" and mass deportations to extermination camps or to killing pits for execution; eviction from the family home; in hiding together with his family in a (former) laundry room in a cellar under a building; construction work for Ostbahn (Eastern Railway) and the sympathetic attitude of the foreman; transfer to labor in maintenance of the home of a German officer; receiving a residency permit for himself and for his family as an"Essential for the Econom" laborer; capture in the street during an"Aktio" and his rescue by the German officer in whose house he is employed; sudden departure of the officer with no prior notification; death of his father in a hospital; escape from the hiding place in the cellar to the home of his aunt inside the Lwow Ghetto; return to work in Ostbahn as a construction worker; labor unloading coal from train cars despite his having an"Essential for the Econom" certificate; establishment of the Janowska camp; transforming of forced laborers into camp inmates; locomotive malfunction and order by the German commander for the inmates to move the packed train cars due to the malfunction; escape together with a friend after careful planning, 1943; arrival at a forest near the Janowska camp.
