The Gorenjska Museum houses archeological, ethnological, historical, art and cultural history collections. The Gorenjska Museum also keeps the books of the prisoners of the Gestapo penitentiary in the manor house in Begunje. The Gorenjska Museum and the Radovljica Municipality Museums, which also include the Museum of Hostages Begunje na Gorenjskem, have scanned the Begunje prison books and the camp books of Slovenian deportees from Goričane Castle who were deported to Germany and made them accessible to the public.

The Gorenjska Museum is a regional museum situated in Kranj. The main locations of the Gorenjska Museum are the Khislstein Castle, the Town Hall, the Ossuary and the Prešern House. The 3 dislocated units are the Tomaž Godec Museum, the Oplen House and the Dairy Museum in Bohinj. The founder of the Gorenjska Museum is the Municipality of Kranj. The Gorenjska Museum performs a public service in the field of the protection of movable cultural heritage and provides and performs a public service in the Gorenjska region. The basic activities of the Museum are financed from the State budget, while other funds are provided by the founder, the Municipality of Kranj, and other municipalities, or from the Museum's own resources. The Kranj City Museum was founded in 1953. In 1963, the Kranj City Museum merged with the Museum of the Revolution to form the Gorenjska Museum Kranj, whose legal successor is today the Gorenjska Museum. Until 1993, it was located on Tavčarjeva Street, and with the return of the premises to the denationalisation beneficiary, it moved to the Khislstein Castle at 44 Tomšičeva Street in Kranj. With the completion of the project in 2012, the administration and professional services moved to 42 Tomšičeva Street, and Khislstein Castle at 44 Tomšičeva Street now houses a special library, educational activities, temporary and permanent exhibitions. Since 2012, the Gorenjska Museum has managed the majority of the Khislstein Castle complex at 42 and 44 Tomšičeva 42 and 44, the Town Hall at Glavni trg 1, where there are depositories, spaces for temporary exhibitions, museum evenings in the Renaissance Hall and permanent exhibitions.

Khislstein Castle, the Town Hall and the Prešeren House are open daily except Mondays from 10 am to 6 pm. Groups can also visit outside opening hours by prior arrangement. Closed on Mondays, 1.1, 1.5, 1.11, Easter and Christmas.
