The archive in Leszno came into existence according to the Decree of the Minister of Education from July 21, 1950 as a branch of Poznań State Archive. In 1951 the archive was renamed County State Archive in Leszno. In 1976, according to the reform of the state administration, the archive became the Leszno Voivodship State Archive. In 1983, according to the Act on National Archival Records and Archives, it was renamed the Leszno State archive.
The State Archive in Leszno possesses 758 collections and archival founds, which makes 106 249 units (as for December 31, 2002). The oldest archival materials dates from 18th century. It gathers state, self-government, and judicial documents, records of schools, financial institutions, political parties, trade unions, firms, cooperatives and social organizations. There is a collection of register books of catholic and protestant churches. The archive also possesses over 4000 volumes library.
The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
The State Archive's holdings are available in the workroom open Monday-Friday 8.00 - 15.00.
After the establishment of the Leszno archive it was placed in one room local in Bolesława Chrobrego street. In 1965 it was relocated to the former Protestant school. From 2000 the archive works in restored building in Solskiego street.
