Hessisches Hauptstaatsarchiv 
After the establishment of the Federal State of Hesse the Archives held responsibility for its state ministries and the central public authorities in 1945. Prior to this, the Archives originated from the Ducal Nassau Central Archive. The Archives were officially named"Hessisches Hauptstaatsarchi" in 1963. In 1985 the Archives were relocated to a new, modern archive building on Mosbacher Straße.

The Hesse Main State Archives are a central archive for the records of Hessian ministries and public and governmental institutions. The Archives hold roughly 50,000 meters of material, which is organized into 2,000 inventories. The inventories include records of the The Holy Roman Empire (until 1806), The Duchy of Nassau (1806 to 1866), Prussia (1866 to 1945), The Federal State of Hesse (since 1945), non-governmental documents, and special inventories (audio-visual material, maps, posters, etc.). Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: 1. Hessisches Sozialministerium, Wiedergutmachungsakten (in Abt. 508), 2. Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt in Wiesbaden Dezernat II 25–Entschädigungsbehörde (Abt.518) [BErG bzw. BEG], 3. Landgericht Wiesbaden, Prozessakten der Entschädigungskammer (in Abt. 467) [includes appeals]; closed files;"ca. 6.000 documents still at the offic" 
Use of the Archives for research purposes is open to the public. Prior inquiries are recommended.
