Holokauszt Emlékközpont
Founded by the Hungarian government in 2002, the Holocaust Memorial Center (short form: HMC) is the first state-founded national institution in Central Eastern Europe dedicated to the memory and history of the Holocaust. In 2004, the institute moved to a new building complex in Budapest including a restored historic synagogue, and opened a permanent interactive exhibition. Holocaust Memorial Center has three main functions. It is a memorial site dedicated to more than half a million victims and 1441 Jewish communities perished in the Holocaust in Hungary; an educational centre to familiarize the general public–especially the young generations–with the tragedy of the Holocaust, its moral, cultural and economical consequences through the institute’s exhibitions, educational and cultural programs; a historical collection and a library that collects, preserves and processes objects, photos and archival documents pertaining to the Holocaust in Hungary.
