After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) formed the so-called Commission d'Espagne (Commission of Spain) on August 26, 1936 which directed and coordinated all of the ICRC's humanitarian activities and operations within both the Republican and Nationalist territories.
