Joseph Borkin papers

Joseph Borkin (1911-1979) was an attorney and author, whose best known work was"The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farbe" (New York: Free Press, 1978), which was an extension of research initially begun while Borkin worked as an attorney with the Patent and Cartel section of the Antitrust Division at the U.S. Department of Justice from 1939 to 1946. During the war years, Borkin investigated and ultimately assisted in the prosecution of the I.G. Farben chemical cartel, publishing"Germany's Master Pla" in 1943. From 1946 onward, Borkin practiced law in Washington, DC.

Consists of correspondence and research material (photocopied and original) related to the research, writing, and publication of the book"The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farbe" by Joseph Borkin. Among the research materials are court documents from various legal cases against successor companies to I.G. Farben, which were tried in United States courts during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as subject files of copied primary and secondary source materials about individuals, organizations, and products related to I.G. Farben. These latter materials range information about the pre-World War I origins of the companies that comprised I.G. Farben, and the products that they developed, including chemical weapons components, to the legal anti-trust cases waged against I.G. Farben as a cartel during World War II, and the post-war trial of I.G. Farben leaders at Nuremberg for crimes against humanity.
