He married Dorothea Reichenthal (b. 1911) in 1933. In summer 1938 they immigrated to the United States via the Netherlands. He became an American citizen and trained at Camp Ritchie (later Fort Ritchie) in Maryland. He served overseas in the US Army in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany and interrogated enemy prisoners. In 1964 Ernst married Ruth Lipow (1915-2015), who immigrated to the United States from Berlin in 1939."@en ;
