The collection consists of three prewar photographs depicting Hans Wijsman of Bloemendaal, the Netherlands in his military uniform. He is pictured with his father and other unidentified individuals. Hans was a Dutch prisoner in Buchenwald from 1943-1945.

Hans Wijsman (1919-2002) was born Johan Hendrik Wijsman on October 3, 1919 in Bloemendaal, the Netherlands. He served with the Dutch Calvary before World War II. After his unit was disbanded, He fled the Netherlands in 1943 with the intention of going to England. He was arrested on September 13, 1943 crossing the Pyrenees from France to Spain and detained in a prison. He was deported to Buchenwald on October 30, 1943. Hans was a forced-laborer at a quarry, and developed gangrene on his leg. He was liberated by the United States Army on April 11, 1945. Hans was reunited with his father after the war, and had a career in business. He was married to Elisabeth Frederika Leendertz and had two stepsons, Willem and Derk.
