Written in response to war reports—and as an assertion of ethnic pride in the face of local antisemitism—the large scale work for chorus, soloists, and orchestra was given a partial performance in 1944. By the time of its full premiere in Stockholm three years later, Pergament had subtitled the Prelude: “In Memoriam.
