In his extended right hand he holds narrow boxes, possibly cigarettes, and shoelaces, and the tray hanging from his neck holds button cards. Behind him on the right sits a small brown spotted dog with a metal pot tied to its tail, head turned toward the viewer. The artist's's name, Tom B. , is printed in the bottom left. Browne was a popular comic artist in late Victorian and Edwardian London, whose cartoons were published in Punch, Tatler, and other periodicals. He was a founding member of the London Sketch Club, had work in the Royal Academy, owned a lithography firm, and copyrighted many designs. Jewish street peddlers and market stall vendors were a common sight on London streets through the 19th and early 20th century. Picturesque scenes of them displaying their wares were a popular subject for inexpensive art forms, such as prints and postcards.
