Ellen M. Fine was born in 1929 in Bingen, Germany to merchant Moritz Mayer (b. 1896) and Alice Mayer (b. 1902). Her father was imprisoned in Buchenwald for six weeks following Kristallnacht, and the family immigrated to the United States in 1940 after receiving affidavits from Moritz's brother in the United States. Alice's parents, Ferdinand and Bertha Simon, were unable to emigrate and were deported in 1942 to Theresienstadt, where they perished.
