David Miller (1920-1995) was born in Pennsylvania to Samuel (b. 1891 in Russia) and Fannie (b. 1891 in Russia) Miller and had a brother, Benjamin (b. 1917) and a sister, Sylvia (b. 1930). In 1942 David enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Sergeant with the Seventh Army, 411th Battalion during World War II. He entered Dachau after liberation and was in charge of camp security. After the war he married Mildred and they had two children.

The notebook was kept by David Miller while serving in the United States Army and contains the names of Jews he encountered shortly after the liberation of Dachau, along with the names of their family members residing in the United States. David attempted to contact the families on behalf of the individuals once he returned to the United States.
