The collection consists of 901 affidavits, solicited by the Chernivtsi (Ukraine) Jewish Survivors Organization. The organization collected the affidavits in order to press the Soviet government for stipendiary pensions in restitution for the atrocities the survivors suffered during World War II. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the organization continued to receive the affidavits. Presumably, the survivors hoped that a successor government would honor the request. Though the entirety of the affidavits originate from the Chernivtsi region, the majority relate to events that occurred in areas outside Chernivtsi. Most of the camps and ghettos mentioned in the documents were located in Transnistria, an area between the lower Dnester and Bug Rivers, administered by Romania from mid-1941 until it was retaken by Soviet troops in the spring of 1944.
Organized in the order received as indicated by the number in the upper right hand corner of the first page of each affidavit. Therefore, the affidavits are in general, though not strict, chronological order from 1990 to 1993
