"My heroine aun" was written in 1987 by Dr. Lowenstein as a tribute to the memory of his aunts, Margarete Elkan, Bertha Bennigsohn, and Elise Katz. Before donating the essay to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Dr.Lowenstein added a brief biography of Margarete Elkan in the form of a cover letter.
