Joseph Crane was born in Vienna, Austria in 1912 and emigrated to the United States in 1929. During World War II, Crane was a member of Company E, of the 329th Regiment of the 83rd U.S. Infantry Division. In May 1945, Crane was assigned to Civilian Internment Camp #5 in Nattenberg, Germany where he acted as a registrar of inmates and as an interpreter.

The collection consists of photographs of SS personnel, a statement given by an internee of Civilian Internment Camp #5, a letter of protest from some internees regarding the delay in their release, two poems, a report about war criminals and war crimes trials, and an arrest report.
