Rabbi from Nitra, Slovakia; best known for his efforts to save Slovakian Jews from deportation during World War II, as a key member of the underground"Working Group" which also sought to raise awareness about the scope and nature of Auschwitz outside Nazi-occupied Europe. Weissmandel narrowly escaped deportation to Auschwitz, and following the war, immigrated to the United States, where he founded the Yeshiva Farm Settlement in Mount Kisco, New York, in 1949.
