Contains documents from various U.S. government agencies about the “Gold Train” or “Werfen Train,” which members of the Arrow Cross Party and officials of the Hungarian National Bank packed with looted Jewish valuables (mostly from Miskilc, Pecs, and Gyor) and sent across the border into Austria in March 1945. (This was not the only such train.) Although some items were pilfered en route, the U.S. Armed Forces captured most and stored them in a warehouse in Austria. U.S. personnel and agencies pilfered (or “borrowed” without returning) further property, and the remainder has been the subject of complicated litigation. The collection also includes considerable documentation about such matters as Allied postwar restitution policies and relations with Hungary.
