NOTE: At this Nazi concentration camp near Langenstein in the Harz Mountains, 6,400 political prisoners of French, Polish, and Russian extraction were held and forced to labor in the construction of a vast underground factory project. During the ten months in which the prisoners lived in this camp, 1,700 persons died of disease and starvation. After its occupation by Task Force CCB of the 8th Armored Division on April 13, 1945, the prisoners continued to die at the rate of 25 per day."@en ;
