        rico:scopeAndContent     "Paul de Vries werd in 1926 geboren in Duitsland, niet ver van de Nederlandse grens. Zijn ouders hadden in Nordhorn een goedlopende manufacturenzaak. Het gezin vlucht na de Kristallnacht naar Nederland waar het noodgedwongen in diverse vluchtelingenkampen verblijft. In februari 1940 wordt het gezin naar Westerbork gestuurd. In februari 1943 werden zijn ouders op transport naar Auschwitz gezet. Geïnterviewde werkt eerst bij de Fürsorge, daarna in de buitendienst waar hij hout moest hakken in de bossen rond Westerbork. Hij zou met het laatste transport naar Theresienstadt worden gedeporteerd, maar dat ging op het laatste moment niet door. Op de sjabbat na de bevrijding werd voor het eerst sinds lange tijd de grote zaal weer als synagoge gebruikt. De sjoeldienst was voor hem een zeer ontroerend moment.
