In de jaren dertig krijgt het gezin het financieel moeilijker. Er is geen geld om Truus naar de universiteit te laten gaan; ze volgt een tweejarige Schoeversopleiding. Als jong meisje leest Truus veel, houdt van muziek, zit op dansles en heeft een hekel aan sport. Ze herinnert zichzelf als een lastig, zelfstandig kind dat regelmatig straf krijgt. In 1941 weet Truus met hulp van de Nederlandse ondergrondse via Frankrijk, Spanje en Cuba te vluchten naar Amerika. Tijdens de oorlog vindt ze werk bij de overzeese Nederlandse Shipping Company. In 1947 trouwt ze met de eveneens Joodse Nederlander Frits Zeehandelaar, die ook tijdens de bezetting uit Nederland is weggekomen en na de oorlog naar de Verenigde Staten is gegaan. Samen zijn ze 51 jaar getrouwd geweest. Pas enkele jaren geleden ontdekt Truus dat haar broer Eduard Beffie in Sobibor is vermoord. Haar ouders zijn in Bergen-Belsen omgekomen. Nog steeds vindt ze de gedachte ondraaglijk dat haar moeder liggend op een plank, vlak voor de bevrijding van het kamp, aan tyfus is gestorven."@nl ;
