Later bij de mobilisatie werd hij in Wageningen geplaatst bij de geneeskundige troepen. Via de radio hoorden ze op de kazerne hoe de Duitse invasie vorderde. Samen met een aantal militairen uit Zwolle moesten ze zich vanuit Wageningen terugtrekken naar Oudewater. Vandaar kon hij al snel terug naar huis, toen Nederland gecapituleerd had. Tijdens de bezettingstijd werkte hij in Enschede in het ziekenhuis, waar een Joodse onderduiker ondanks de goede zorgen van het personeel overleed en begraven werd in de kelder.
