Zat voor de oorlog bij de NJS en ging na de Duitse inval als 15-jarige naar de NAD. Van daaruit overgeplaatst naar de RAD in Polen. Hier bestond zijn taak vooral uit stelingen graven. Was in Polen getuige van Duitse acties tegen Poolse joden. Werd vervolgens overgeplaatst naar het Vrijwilligerslegioen Nederland, waar hij bij de Pioniere terechtkwam. In 1943 bij de Brigade 'Nederland' ingedeeld. Raakte in het najaar van 1944 onherstelbaar aan zijn been verwond en keerde naar Nederland terug. Eindigde de oorlog als Rottenführer.
