Colloquy with a conscience
2 electronic resources (15, 2 pages)
The file is a copy of the article in the Daily Telegraph magazine from October 8th, 1971 containing the interview Gitta Sereny had with Franz Stangl, the convicted commandant of Sobibor and later Treblinka. The interview covers the stations in Stangl's life from his childhood in Austria, becoming a weaver and later joining the Austrian police. After the Anschluss he transferred to the T4 unit which was responsible for the Euthansia of handicapped persons. After it was dismantled he was in charge of the Sobibor camp, and later on Treblinka. The interview tries to get Stangl to give personal insights into his motivations, crossroads, and finally acceptance of guilt. He died shortly after the completion of the interview.
