Franz Dahlem was a German Communist Anti-Nazi leader who became wanted when the Nazi's took power. He fled to France and was a leading figure of his party in exile. The French Pro-Nazi government interned him in various camps and then handed him over to the Gestapo. He was imprisoned in Mauthausen until 1945. After the war he gained back his senior posts in the East German Communist Government, but in 1953 he was purged by the accusation of having ties with the West. He was removed from all of his posts as a"West emigran" and was in danger of being hanged. In 1956 he was rehabilitated -- (German Resistance Memorial Center -Biographies)
