Dietrich Von Choltitz was a German General who was the military governor of Paris during the last days of the German occupation in World War II. He claimed to have disobeyed several direct orders from Hitler to destroy Paris rather than surrender it intact to the Allies. He surrendered the city to the Allies along with the garrison that remained in the city -- (ASK.com)
