Die Geschichte eines Lebens II
1 electronic resource (60 pages)
The file is the continuation of Ludwik Hirszfeld's autobiography"Geschichte eines Leben" (Story of a life). After the end of the war Hirszfeld and his wife returned to Warsaw, where he established a serum institute modeled after the Ehrlich Institute for Experimental Therapy in Frankfurt. He soon became the deputy director and scientific head of the State Hygiene Institute in Warsaw and, in 1924, professor at the University. He gives an overview of his work, books he published and mentions Charles Nicolle’s obituary who died in 1936. He talks about his attendance at various congresses in London, Paris, Rome and Geneva where he met many scientists from all over the world. He is aware of the rising nationalism among many scientists and doctors and criticized Dr. Sauerbruch in a personal letter, for the open letter he published in 1933, pleading for cooperation with the new regime. He also met the Duce in Rome shortly before the invasion of Abessinia. The next chapter deals with the beginning of the 2. World War, the invasion of Poland and the bombarding of Warsaw and its eventual surrender.
