[Negroes and the War]
1 electronic resource (72 pages)
The file contains the copy of an illustrated booklet entitled “Negroes and the War” and published by the United States Office of War Information in 1942 in order to show the improvement of the African American population’s social and economic situation, to highlight the African Americans’ contribution to the United States Armed Forces, and therefore, to convince them of the need to win over the Fascist Axis formed by Germany, Italy, and Japan. Thus, Chandler Owen, a renowned intellectual of African American background, underlines the specific African American interest in fighting Germany and its Allies for their racist politics in his introductory essay on “Negroes and the War”. Following his essay, the booklet presents pictures aiming to underline the achievements of integrative politics and the role of African Americans in various fields of public life: in the Education sector, in the Media, in the Church, in agricultural and industrial workplaces, in the sectors of Culture and Sports, but mainly in the United States Armed Forces.
