The text is a speech made by Carleton Putnam at the Putnam Letters Club of Washington D.C. on February 12, 1963. In his speech, Carleton Putnam takes up the criticism towards his book “Race and Reason”, in which he had countered the integrational politics of the Civil Rights movement and anti-segregation initiatives by putting forward the thesis of biological and evolutionary differences between people of African American background and people of European origin. While he bases his assumptions on works by Carleton S. Coon, he directly names his critics, such as Oscar Handlin and other professors of anthropology, and sees their anti-segregationist politics as being the result of an academic influence that he characterizes as intimidating."@en ;
