[The Negro Scientist]
1 electronic resource (8 pages)
The file contains a copy of the article “The Negro Scientist” written by W.E. Burghardt Du Bois, and published in “The American Scholar”, the quarterly literary magazine of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, in 1939 (Vol. 8, no. 3, pp. 309-320). In his article, Du Bois presents the academic biographies of various scientists of African American background in the fields of Biology, Medicine, Zoology, Chemistry, and Social Sciences. Despite their successful scientific work, they were deprived of academic career opportunities because of their African American background, Du Bois argues. Furthermore, he points out the structural discrimination of African American students and academics in Universities, Colleges, and Libraries. Finally, he calls for appreciation of the scientific contribution of African American scientists, and urges to acknowledge their potential.
