[Speech by Elly Warburg]
1 online resource (3 pages)
The file contains aspeech of Elly Warburg from 1913 on the occasion of the meeting of the Association of German Jews. In her speech, she asks what unites German Jews? The men would know each other from the professional world, but they were only the women of their men. Nevertheless, she would also have something in common, asking how she was raising her children to be German Jews. Because the mother is the person the child goes to when he hears: you are a Jew, I must not speak to you. The mother is the one who helps the children to fight against the prejudices and gives them the confidence to believe in themselves and to equality with other children. Questions such as: What are we? Are we Jews or are we German? Do I have to be Christian to be German? Elly explains that the children should accept the best of German culture, but at the same time be themselves and be aware of their Jewish descent. Because only children who can be themselves and do not have to play a role become good German and good Jews. Anti-Semitism cannot harm them and Germany will be proud of its citizens.
