[Baptism certificate and imprisonment of Maurice Joly]
1 electronic resource (6 pages)
The file contains the baptismal certificate of Maurice Joly from 1829 and information about the baptism itself. The certificate was needed in the Bern trial as a proof that Joly was not Jewish. Maurice Joly was a French publicist and lawyer known for his political satire titled"Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu ou la politique de Machiavel au XIXe siècl", that attacked the regime of Napoleon III. The"Dialogu" and its author became famous later, inadvertently and for an enigmatic reason. In the beginning of 20th century Joly's book was used as a basis for The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an infamous Russian-made antisemitic literary forgery. There is an abundance of evidence that The Protocols were lavishly plagiarized from Joly's book. Furthermore 2 documents proofing his imprisonment in 1866 can be seen. On 25 April 1865, he was sentenced to 18 months at the Sainte-Pélagie Prison in Paris because of his a direct, and then illegal, criticism of Louis-Napoleon's rule in his book.
