Ioannis Stathakis was born in in Trikala, Greece. He was a prominent lawyer in Thessaloniki, with both Jewish and Christian clientele. Stathakis' action during the Nazi Occupation has been controversial, as he has been accused of collaboration with the nazi occupational forces. On the other hand, he also seems to have helped a jewish newborn avoid the deportation to Auschwitz with his parents. The baby survived disguised as Christian in the municipal nursery of Thessaloniki and after the end of the War he was reunited with some of his surviving relatives.
