The archive is part of the archives of the Provisional Government of Thessaloniki (1916-1917). It is a source of information on important social and political issues of the New Countries (Macedonia & Thrace) in the face of the WWI and the National Schism (Ethnikos Dichasmos) in Greece. In the archive there is evidence concerning the actions of the Entente forces in Macedonia. It includes the correspondence of the adviser of Public Education with officials of the services of the Army of the Orient (Armée d' Orient), on matters of food supply, movement control, the release of detainees and the fate of missing persons, the collection and control of information. The archive includes information on issues of religious minorities related to property rights, religious administration, the education of the Muslim community and its relations with the Greek population, and the education of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki. The archive includes reports of educational managers and supervisors, reports of administrative authorities in Greek and French, residents' reports and applications, the lists of educational staff, the certificates of study and service attached to educational applications, and the school expenditure budgets of the years 1910-1912. An interesting aspect of the file is that it constitutes a summary map of the primary and secondary schools that operated in the New Countries a few years after their incorporation into the Greek State (1912). The archive is also a source of information about old toponyms of these areas. Most of them, identified with today's counterparts, have been recorded in the alphabetical index.
The collection is divided into six (6) series, each of them includes a number of folders, arranged as follows: • Counselor’s Office (fold. 1) • Religious Affairs Office (fold. 2-6) • Secondary Education Office (fold. 7-14) • Primary Education Office (fold. 15-24) • Office of Antiquities (fold. 25) • Accounting Service (fold. 26-36) • Two folders out of series that contain drafts of decrees, sheets of the Gazette and circulars of the Provisional Government (fold. 37-38)
