Dr Herbert Lewin (1899-1982) was a German physician, Holocaust survivor, and representative of German Jewry. The World War I veteran survived the imprisonment in the Łodz Ghetto and some concentration camps. Setteling in West Germany after the Second World War Lewin was appointed professor in Frankfurt am Main and clinic director in Offenbach. From 1963-69 he served as president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

The correspondence between Lewin and The Wiener Library deals with: the writing of a first eyewitness account for the Library’s eyewitness testimony project and an additional part about the so called ‘Zigeunerlager’ (area for Sinti and Roma) in the Łodz Ghetto; the sending of published material; an information request on a potential SS-membership of a fellow physician; and Lewin’s birthday as well as the awarding of the German Order of the Merit.
