Correspondence with Baeck, Leo

Dr Leo Baeck (1873-1956) was an eminent German rabbi, scholar and international leader of Liberal Judaism. He had presided over Germany's largest Jewish community in Berlin for almost four decades before being deported to Theresienstadt (Terezin) in 1943. Upon liberation Baeck moved to London and became president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. A highly regarded figure he served as namesake for numerous organisations in various countries including among others the Leo Baeck Institute with branches in New York, London and Jerusalem as well as several B’nai B’rith Lodges.

Comprising handwritten and typewritten letters the correspondence sheds light on the close association between Baeck and The Wiener Library. It focuses on various issues including among others: Baeck’s consulting advice for the Library on certain issues; his 80th anniversary and the presentation of a Festschrift on this occasion; some matters following his passing in 1956. Contained is a leaflet, an invitation card, memos, circulars, and some typescripts primarily related to the Festschrift.
