Glogau Jewish community: Archives

Jews first settled in Glogau, also known as Gross-Glogau, Lower Silesia, now Glogow, Poland, in the 1600s. The community established its first cemetery in 1712 and its first synagogue in the 1730s. Jews were permitted to practise their religion but they were also required to pay a poll tax. A Jewish community organisation, Kahal, was established to administer this tax. The population began to decline after World War One having reached a peak of 2800 in the 1800s, and was completely destroyed during the Nazi era.
