"INDEX of Names: of Nazis (including collaborators and earlier ideologues) suspected, accused and/or convicted of war crimes; and of Nazi war crime trials (1955-2004)

This INDEX was compiled from names mentioned in articles and reports on war crime trials (WWII), which were largely held in West Germany, but some took place in the East, all between 1955 and 2004. Most of these articles were contemporary with the actual trials, and most were written in German. These articles on microfilm are part of the Archive Collection of the Wiener Library, London. The articles are filed under sections: G5.b; G5c; G5e; and sub-sections, and appear on Reels PC 2a; 44-49.

During the actual trials, as well as in contemporary publications discussing those events, background information came to light about men and women accused of war crimes, who had been tried previously, tried elsewhere, or never tried at all. Those who evaded justice did so if they were killed in the war; if they fled - to South America, Muslim countries or Western counties where they were often sheltered under assumed names; if they committed suicide; if they were deemed too ill to stand trial; if the statute of limitation was applied in their case; or other. There were also those who were never officially accused, for political reasons. Nevertheless, the names of such individuals who themselves did not stand trial but who were clearly accused in the trials of others, and mentioned by writers of the articles -whether in detail or cursorily- were also entered in the INDEX of Names which follows.

Each of these trials was given the name of the principal individual(s) accused, or of the camp to which the trial referred. However, in many cases a single name-heading serves for several trials related to one individual; trials which took place at different places, with different accused (in cases of concentration camp trials and others) and on different dates.

This INDEX of Names lists, in one alphabetical sequence, the names of : individuals (those suspected or accused, whether they stood trial or not, including collaborators and ideologues); concentration camps mentioned in the articles; and headings as classified by the Wiener Library, London, where the list is now available on film.

The list of names is browseable on line. However, the articles themselves are only available directly at the Wiener Library, where a more detailed list on one of the OPACs needs to be consulted first.

For names incorporating: ä; ö or ü, check under a; o; u; as well as under ae; oe; ue
