Si Frumkin was born in Kaunas (Kovno), Lithuania, where he spent his childhood with his family until they were deported to a concentration camp by the Nazis. Si was the only member of his family to survive. He emigrated to the USA and became a journalist and, as a fluent Russian speaker, an active supporter of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union, highlighting the antisemitism which was prevalent there.
