Dokumenty tohoto celku byly ve většině předány v letech 1949-1950 Ústřednímu archivu Ministerstva vnitra (později Státnímu ústřednímu archivu v Praze, nyní Národnímu archivu). Část spisů byla delimitována věcně příslušným krajským národním výborům.
The documents of this unit were mostly transferred in 1949–1950 to the Central Archive of the Ministry of the Interior (later the State Central Archive in Prague, today the National Archive). Some files were allocated to the materially competent regional national committees.

Zemský úřad byl správním úřadem s rozsáhlou agendou ve všech oblastech vnitřní správy české země. Zahrnoval všechny záležitosti, které v nejvyšším stupni náležely do působnosti úřadů třetí instance, tj. jednotlivých ministerstev.
Po vzniku Československé republiky nahradil České místodržitelství úřad s názvem Zemská správa politická, který od 1. prosince 1928 nesl název Zemský úřad v Praze. Bylo mu podřízeno 103 okresních úřadů. Na zemské úřady byla přenesena agenda státního občanství, spolků, hlášení cizinců, matrik, nadací atd. V roce 1934 měl úřad vedle prezidia, účtáren a sekretariátu 53 oddělení.
Po 15. březnu 1939 začaly zemské úřady podléhat přímému dozoru říšského protektora. V roce 1942 vstoupilo v platnost nařízení o správě z příkazu říše, tzv. Reichsauftragsverwaltung (RAV), jimž se přenesly na prezidium Zemského úřadu některé agendy Úřadu říšského protektora v Čechách a na Moravě, např. agenda smíšených manželství. Po osvobození Československa se ujaly veřejné správy národní výbory, které byly prohlášeny v Košickém vládním programu novými orgány státní moci. Zemský národní výbor v Praze se utvořil 11. května 1945. Dne 24. února 1949 byl rozpuštěn a jeho agendu převzaly krajské národní výbory.
The Provincial Office was an administrative authority with a wide-ranging agenda in all areas of internal administration of the Czech lands. It handled all matters that, at the highest level, fell within the jurisdiction of third-instance offices, i.e., individual ministries.
After the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, the Provincial Administration replaced the former Czech Governorate with an office called the Provincial Political Administration, which from 1 December 1928 bore the name Provincial Office in Prague. It had authority over 103 district offices. The Provincial Offices were also assigned the administration of citizenship, associations, registration of foreigners, civil registries, foundations, and other matters. By 1934, in addition to the presidium, accounting offices, and secretariat, the office had 53 departments.
After 15 March 1939, the Provincial Offices came under the direct supervision of the Reich Protector. In 1942, the ordinance on administration by order of the Reich, the so-called Reichsauftragsverwaltung (RAV), came into effect, transferring certain agendas of the Reich Protector’s Office in Bohemia and Moravia—such as the administration of mixed marriages—to the presidium of the Provincial Office.
After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, public administration was taken over by national committees, which were declared the new organs of state authority in the Košice Government Program. The Provincial National Committee in Prague was established on 11 May 1945. It was dissolved on 24 February 1949, and its agenda was assumed by the regional national committees.
