"Policejní ředitelství v Praze bylo zřízeno dvorským dekretem Josefa II v roce 1785. Místní působnost úřadu se postupně rozšiřovala. V roce 1850 bylo stanoveno, že v místech, kde policejní obvod se rozkládá na jednotlivé okresy, mají být zřízeny centrální úřady. Pro vyřizování společných záležitostí byla zřízena zvláštní oddělení, jejichž působnost se vztahovala na celý pražský obvod (např. oddělení bezpečnostní, pasové, ústřední přihlašovací úřad).
