Tento rozsáhlý fond je rozdělen do sedmi dílčích částí: 1. prezidium, 2. stará registratura 1918-1944, 3. nová registratura 1936-1953, 4. hraniční spisy, 5. referát L, 6. dodatky a 7. fotografie. Dokumenty dílčích částí ilustrují široký záběr agendy Ministerstva vnitra, která zahrnovala kromě bezpečnostních a správních záležitostí také menšinové a jazykové otázky, státní občanství, evidenci obyvatelstva, tiskové a cenzurní záležitosti a zčásti také agendu sociální péče.
Dokumenty k dějinám holocaustu se nacházejí především ve spisech prezidia, staré i nové registratury a také v dodatcích a zahrnují problematiku emigrace, židovských spolků, židovských uprchlíků ze Sudet, arizace židovského majetku a zřizování ghett. Z období po roce 1945 se vztahují také k návratu přeživších z koncentračních táborů a k jejich začlenění do společnosti včetně problematiky státního občanství.
This large collection is divided into seven subdivisions: 1. presidium, 2. old registry 1918-1944, 3. new registry 1936-1953, 4. boundary files, 5. reference L, 6. appendices, and 7. photographs. The documents of the subdivisions illustrate the broad scope of the Ministry of the Interior's agenda, which included, in addition to security and administrative matters, minority and language issues, citizenship, population registration, press and censorship matters, and, in part, the social welfare agenda.
The documents on the history of the Holocaust are mainly found in the files of the Presidium, the old and new registers, and also in the appendices, and include the issues of emigration, Jewish associations, Jewish refugees from the Sudetenland, the appropriation of Jewish property, and the establishment of ghettos. From the post-1945 period, they also cover the return of survivors from concentration camps and their integration into society, including the issue of citizenship.

Prezidiální i všeobecná spisovna byly až do roku 1940, resp. 1944, vedeny systémem protokolárních čísel a ukládacích značek v pětiletých spisových obdobích. Při inventarizaci se vycházelo z toho, že jsou dochovány dobře vedené pomocné knihy, které slouží při vyhledávání jednotlivých spisů.
The presidial and general files were maintained in a system of protocol numbers and storage markers in five-year filing periods until 1940 and 1944, respectively. The inventory was based on the preservation of well-kept subsidiary books, which are used to locate individual files.

The legal basis for the Ministry of the Interior was provided by Act No. 2/1918 Coll. of 2 November 2018, which established the highest administrative offices in the Czechoslovak Republic. The Ministry of the Interior continued the official agenda of the former Czech governorate; its remit included, in particular, the organisation of political administration and security services, the affairs of civil servants, the organisation of provincial, district and municipal self-government, and questions of citizenship and home rule, including emigration. It consisted of two essentially separate units - the Presidium and four departments, which were further subdivided into 18 and 16 divisions respectively, and this organisational division remained in force, with minor variations, until 1945. At the time of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the German population was excluded from its jurisdiction and fell under the newly established offices of the German occupation administration headed by the Office of the Reich Protector in Bohemia and Moravia. After the administrative reform in 1942, some of the powers of the German offices were transferred back to the Protectorate's network of district and provincial offices (headed by the Ministry of the Interior), and the leading positions in many offices were taken over by German officials. After the war, the Ministry was restored to its pre-war Czechoslovakia form.
Právní základ Ministerstva vnitra byl dán zákonem č. 2/1918 Sb. z. a n. ze dne 2. listopadu 2018, kterým se zřizovaly nejvyšší správní úřady v Československé republice. Ministerstvo vnitra navázalo na úřední agendu bývalého českého místodržitelství; do jeho působnosti patřila zejména organizace politické správy a bezpečnostní služby, záležitosti státních zaměstnanců, organizace zemské, okresní a obecní samosprávy, otázky státního občanství a domovského práva, včetně vystěhovalectví. Skládalo se ze dvou, v podstatě samostatných celků – prezidia a čtyř odborů, které se dále členily na 18, resp. 16 oddělení, a toto organizační členění zůstalo v platnosti s menšími odchylkami až do roku 1945. V době Protektorátu Čechy a Morava bylo z jeho působnosti vyňato německé obyvatelstvo, které spadalo pod nově zřízené úřady německé okupační správy v čele s Úřadem říšského protektora v Čechách a na Moravě. Po správní reformě přešly v roce 1942 některé pravomoci z německých úřadů zpět na protektorátní síť okresních a zemských úřadů (v čele s ministerstvem vnitra) a vedoucí funkce mnoha úřadů převzali němečtí úředníci. Po válce byla působnost ministerstva obnovena v podobě, jakou mělo v předválečném Československu.
