The first record of the town of Havlíčkův Brod dates from 1256. From the Middle Ages until 1945, the town was called Německý Brod. Since 1637 it had been a royal town. Jews are documented to have been living there in the Middle Ages, then they were forbidden to stay there. The Jews were not allowed to come to the town again until 1848. From 1784, it was the seat of the municipality office, in 1850-1945 of the town hall, and in 1945-1990 of the Municipal National Committee of Havlíčkův Brod, the district town, the seat of the judicial district and the political district. 
The town archives were taken over by the district archives in Havlíčkův Brod. The archive materials were kept at the town hall and some documents were stored in the town museum. The older part of the archives from 1784-1850 is organized and the archival materials after 1850 are arranged according to the agenda of the town hall.

The fonds contains deeds, law books, official books and documents from the fields of economics, culture, church, politics, construction, etc. It contains the following materials on the history of Jews: after 1848 - buildings, expansion land operation of Jewish enterprises: textile factories of the Mahler, Bauer, Stiassny, A. B. Musil, and Löwy & Drucker families, the Roth steam mill. First World War - constructing a refugee colony for Jews from Galicia and Bukovina, Jewish refugees. The first Czechoslovak Republic - self-government, minutes of the council board and council meetings, elections - mayor of Jewish origin Robert Neuern. World War II - decrees against Jews.
