        rico:history               "Jacob Landau (1896-1980) was the son of Avraham Yosef (d. 1911 in Poland), and Itta (nee Pilczewicz d. 1931 in Montreal), of Zawiercie, Poland. They had seven children, one of whom was killed in the Holocaust. Jacob and his wife Rose Sheinfeld (1892-1970) were married in Montreal in 1922. After emigrating from Europe (Poland?) they moved between Ottawa and Montreal several times before eventually settling in Ottawa for good. They had two children, Sylvia (Irving Shier) and Issie (Edith Goldberg). In Ottawa, Jacob Landau was a butcher and a delicatessen owner until his retirement around 1960. In the 1970's Jacob Landau was the Gabbai Rishon of the Ottawa Chevra Kadisha. Issie and Edith’s children are Jerrold, married to Tzipora (nee Rachlin, a descendant of the Epstein branch of the Cohen family as well as the Leikin family); and Michael. Issie Landau worked as a chartered accountant. He trained with Martin Levinson and Company, where most of the Jewish accountants of Ottawa of his vintage trained. He ran his own accounting firm for many years. In the early 1980s, he merged his individual firm with Ernst & Whinney, which subsequently morphed into various other incarnations of the big 8 firm. He retired in 1991, but continued consulting until his final illness. Issie was heavily involved in volunteer work in the Ottawa Jewish community, primarily in the area of finance and audit. He always shunned honor. The one honor he accepted was the Gilbert Greenberg Distinguished Service award - the highest volunteer award of the Ottawa Jewish community -- which he accepted in June, 1996, when he was already suffering from his terminal illness. Yahrzeit is observed on 9 Elul."@en ;
