In 1902 he married Chaja Rubin in Bialystok, Poland. During the Second World War the couple lived in Nice, France. On 18 June 1942 Matus obtained a diplomatic service passport in Vichy, France, issued to him by the Republic of Liberia, represented by Baron O. de Bogaerde, Minister Plenipotentiary.
