Since March 1, 1999, the Västra Götaland Region and the City of Gothenburg have had a joint board, the Archive Board for the Västra Götaland Region and the City of Gothenburg, which functions as an archive authority according to the Swedish Archival Act. The city and the region each appoint three members and three deputies to the board. The Regional Archive is the archive board's administration, which preserves and provides public documents from the City of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland, as well as from the defunct county councils of Gothenburg and Bohus County Council, Skaraborg County Council and Älvsborg County Council. It also works with supervision and advice for the city's and region's authorities and companies. In addition, it preserves archives donated or deposited by associations in Gothenburg.
