The archive in Pszczyna possesses 213 collections and archival founds, which makes 84800 units and over 900 running meters (as for December 31, 2010). The oldest documents originate from 13th century. The most valuable collection is the Archive of Dukes of Pszczyna (1287-1945). It consists of administration, economic and family records of Pszczyna Estate owners: Piasts (till 1336), Przemyslides (1336-1480), Prince Kazimierz II (1480-1517), Thurzo family (1517-1548), von Promnitz family (1548-1765), princes von Anhalt-Coethen (1765-1846) and princes von Hochberg (1846-1945). There some archival records of Pszczyna Estate's towns: Pszczyna (1466-1945), Mikołów (1606-1945) and Bieruń Stary (1826-1945), judiciary documents (1849-1945), register books of Catholic and Protestant churches from the end of 18th century to 1874 and records of factories and industry institutions connected with Pszczyna ducal holdings.

The archive in Pszczyna came into existence in 1950 according to the Decree of the Minister of Education from July 21, 1950 on the foundations of the privaate archive of the dukes of Pszczyna (Herzoge von Pless). From the beginning it works as a branch of Katowice Voivodship Archive (Katowice State Archive).

The archive's holdings are available in the workroom open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 9.00 - 14.00.
The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
The archive is located in the north-east part of the Pszczyna Castle in the site of the former Dukes of Pszczyna Archive. It still uses historical archival equipment, including special wooden archival cabinets.
