The archive in Ełk possesses about 440 collections and archival founds, which makes over 117000 units and 850 running meters. They are maps, technical documents, records of state and local administration, judiciary, registry, financial institutions, factories and churches (mostly Protestant). The Ełk archive possesses German language collections (1718-1944), Russian language collection (times of partition of Poland), and Polish language collections (after 1918).

The Archive in Ełk was created in 1954 as a County State Archive. In 1976, according to the reform of state administration, the archive became a branch of the Voivodship State Archive in Suwałki (from 1984 - State Archive in Suwałki).

The access is regulated by Instruction No. 4 of the Head Office of State Archives in Poland, dated February 1, 2013.
In 1954-1963 the archive was located in the building of the County Office at 6 kwietnia street. In 1963 it was relocated to the former public bath house at Kąpielowa street. In September 2001 it was again relocated to the building of former workshop of the technical school at Armii Krajowej street.
