The oldest documents managed by the Westfries Archief, dating from the fourteenth century, can be found in the archives of the cities Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik. The most recent archives of local authorities date from the 1990s. Often, especially in private collections, even more recent documents can be found. Almost all of the archives and collections are accessible through a database of over 120.000 descriptions. The library contains over 25.000 titles, representing by far the largest collection of books about the region of Westfriesland.

In 1974, the West Frisian municipalities transfered their archives to a regional archive.The municipalities agreed to assign their duties to manage the historical archives to the Westfries Archief.

The Westfries Archief is open from Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 5 pm.
On your first visit you will be registered as a visitor at the information desk. You are required to identify yourself. In all subsequent visits, you must sign up for registration.
The reading room is devided into a self service area, a digital working space and an area where you can read archival materials. Many geneaological sources can be viewed at the available microchip machines.
It is allowed to use a photo camera without flash in the reading room
The Westfries Archief has a private parking lot where you can park for free. Moreover, the archives are at a 12 minute walking distance from the train station in Hoorn.
